On October 17th, a ceremony was held in Beijing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Zhao Songting, a legendary figure in the world of bamboo flute music. This event marked the debut of the newly published work “The Great Master: Complete Works of Zhao Songting’s Flute Art,” released by the People’s Music Publishing House, alongside an academic seminar focusing on Zhao’s artistic contributions.

Zhao Songting is recognized as one of China’s foremost bamboo flute performers, educators, composers, and theorists, dedicating over sixty years to the art of the flute. The new publication, carefully curated to honor his centenary, serves not only as a comprehensive collection of Zhao’s artistic life but also as a condensed history of Chinese bamboo flute art. The book is divided into two main sections: the first includes Zhao’s writings, teaching materials, flute compositions, and manuscripts on the Book of Changes, while the second part showcases the artistic legacy of the Zhao flute school—featuring papers from his direct disciples and representatives of the second generation, along with exemplary flute works. Overall, this publication is deemed a monumental compilation of Zhao Songting’s flute artistry.

During the subsequent seminar, attendees engaged in deep discussions regarding Zhao Songting’s professional contributions, his influences, stylistic characteristics, teaching methods, and creative output. They shared insights and research findings gained from studying the Zhao flute style, emphasizing Zhao Songting’s remarkable impact on preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture, particularly in the realm of bamboo flute music. Experts at the seminar agreed that the release of this comprehensive volume holds significant historical and cultural importance in nurturing the Zhao flute tradition and advancing the broader cultural landscape of Chinese music, demonstrating its potential for creative transformation and innovative development.

This event was co-hosted by the People’s Music Publishing House and the Bamboo Flute Professional Committee of the Chinese National Orchestra Society, aiming to carry forward and promote excellent traditional culture while delving deeper into the study of Zhao Songting’s artistic style amidst the evolving context of contemporary bamboo flute music.

On October 19, the National Sports Industry Vocational Skills Competition Finals kicked off at the National Olympic Sports Center in Beijing. On October 11, at Xiamen’s Huaqiao University, a representative of the recipients of the Chen Jiageng Scholarship recited “Ode to Jiageng,” expressing admiration and remembrance for the esteemed patriot and overseas Chinese leader, Mr. Chen Jiageng. During the ceremony, Xu Xipeng, the Party Secretary of Huaqiao University, highlighted the significant connections the university has forged over its 64 years of philanthropic development, linking closely with Chinese overseas communities and continuing to grow under the influence of Jiageng Spirit. To date, the university has cultivated over 260,000 talents, with more than 60,000 alumni now serving as friendly ambassadors promoting cooperation between China and the world.

From its inception, Huaqiao University has been deeply rooted in Mr. Chen’s vision. In 1960, when the government decided to establish the university, Mr. Chen, who was then the Chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, generously donated 5 million in foreign currency to fund advanced equipment and building materials. The university’s predecessor institution, Jimei Overseas Chinese School, was established based on Mr. Chen’s suggestions and under his leadership.

The “Remembering Jiageng” short video series was also launched at the event. Organized and produced by 119 students from the Jiageng Academy, the series consists of twelve short films that capture Mr. Chen’s life and achievements through four thematic chapters: “Loyalty and Public Service,” “Integrity and Determination,” “Frugality,” and “Innovation.”

Kong Zhiyong, an international student from Cambodia who contributed to the “Frugality” chapter, shared, “By researching, reading related literature, and visiting the Chen Jiageng Memorial Hall, we composed these stories that deeply reflect Mr. Jiageng’s spirit.”

To honor outstanding performance, Vice President Wang Xiuyong presented awards to exceptional Chen Jiageng Scholarship recipients from the past year. Since the establishment of the scholarship in 2017, 408 overseas Chinese students from nine countries and regions along the Belt and Road Initiative have benefited from it. In May 2018, the university also founded the Jiageng Academy to enhance educational quality.

On October 14, 2023, in Nanxun District of Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, the China Society of Automotive Engineers partnered with the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association to kick off the “2024 China Society of Automotive Engineers Baja Competition – Nanxun Station” and host the global debut of the Hydrogen Baja event. The past decade of the Baja competition has been a testament to the continual progress of energy technology within the automotive sector. The introduction of the Hydrogen Baja adds a fresh element to the event, showcasing the immense potential of hydrogen and fuel cell technology in the automotive field.

Irvine, California, has recently made headlines with a controversial decision by the city council to approve a plan allowing the construction of up to 57,656 housing units by 2045. This resolution has raised concerns among the Chinese community in the area, particularly regarding the potential impact on housing prices. Real estate agents point out that when supply exceeds demand, prices are likely to fall; however, some believe that the decision won’t significantly affect Irvine’s housing market in the short term.

During a city council meeting on August 13, the council approved the General Plan for 2045, which includes provisions for the construction of a significant number of housing units, including 10,000 designated for low and extremely low-income residents. The vote was passed with a margin of 4 to 1, with Vice Mayor Larry Agran casting the dissenting vote.

Will this new plan influence the housing market in Irvine? Real estate expert Bingxin Li emphasizes that one of the main factors affecting home prices is the balance of supply and demand. With the increase in housing supply permitted in Irvine, if the market trends downward, we can expect a reduction in prices. He suggests that this large-scale construction could help temper the current surge in prices in the city.

Li also expressed concern over the unreasonably high current housing prices in Irvine, noting that a 2,000-square-foot condominium is priced between $1.6 million and $1.8 million—a situation he describes as “almost bubble-like growth.” He advises potential investors in Irvine’s real estate market to take a step back and reconsider their timing.

On the other hand, another Southern California real estate agent, Jason Nie, believes that the housing market in Irvine will not be significantly impacted by this planning initiative in the short term. He points out that 2045 is still quite far off and that real estate acts as a hedge against inflation, suggesting that the immediate effects of the plan on home prices will be minimal. Nie notes that in the past year and a half, housing prices in Irvine have been driven up considerably, partly due to Chinese buyers, who are likely to hold on to their properties in the long run, reducing the risk of a sudden market crash.

Aside from market implications, some residents have expressed concerns about the impact on the city’s environment. Amy Liu, a local real estate agent and resident, is skeptical about the plan’s effect on the housing market but worries about whether the city’s infrastructure will be able to accommodate so many new homes. She explains that this plan is a long-term strategy and won’t lead to a sudden influx of housing overnight. The construction of new homes could attract more people to Irvine, potentially invigorating the real estate market further.

Irvine is known for its exemplary city planning and has received numerous accolades, including being named the best city in Orange County for eight consecutive years by the Orange County Register, recognized as the “Champion City for Fiscal Strength” by Fiscal Times, and awarded the seventh-best park system in the U.S. by the Trust for Public Land.

**Health Insights: Enhancing Elderly Nutrition for Longevity**

As we celebrate the Double Ninth Festival today, it’s essential to focus on the health and nutritional needs of our elderly population—a matter that impacts overall public health. In recent years, various regions in China have launched initiatives such as “senior dining tables,” which aim to improve the nutritional intake of older adults. However, many seniors still lack knowledge about balanced diets. How can elderly individuals maintain their health through nutrition? To find out, we spoke with Dr. Liu Xihong, Chief Physician of the Clinical Nutrition Department at the Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Liu emphasizes that a balanced diet and adequate nutrition are fundamental to the health and longevity of seniors. She recommends that older adults aim to consume at least 12 different types of food daily and 25 different types weekly, ensuring a mix of whole grains, proteins, fruits, and vegetables. It’s crucial to keep meals light, with low oil and salt content. Daily cooking oil intake should be limited to 20-25 grams, and a variety of plant oils should be used rather than sticking to just one type. Staying hydrated is also important, with a daily water intake of approximately 1.5 to 1.7 liters, adjusted based on physical activity levels.

“With reduced physical activity, seniors require fewer calories. However, they still need many nutrients, and in some cases, the need for vital nutrients like protein, calcium, minerals, and vitamins actually increases,” Dr. Liu points out. She highlights that 30% to 36% of older adults experience deficiencies in at least one trace element, which underscores the importance of a balanced diet to compensate for decreased caloric intake. Special attention should be given to consuming sufficient amounts of animal proteins and soy products, which provide high-quality protein along with essential vitamins and minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc—while being easily absorbed by the body.

Furthermore, Dr. Liu advises that as people age, their digestive systems may not function as well. She recommends prioritizing soft, nutrient-dense foods. If seniors struggle with chewing or digestion, it may be beneficial to consider dietary supplements under the guidance of a nutritionist or physician to fill gaps in their nutrition and caloric intake.

“In addition to maintaining a proper diet, seniors should also engage in regular physical activity. This helps enhance their overall health, improves cardiovascular function, and boosts mental well-being,” Dr. Liu suggests. She encourages older adults to choose appropriate forms of exercise based on their capabilities and surroundings, recommending gentle activities like walking, brisk walking, or tai chi to minimize the risk of injury or falls. Lastly, she stresses the importance of regular nutritional screenings to monitor one’s nutritional status, allowing for timely intervention if problems with malnutrition or overnutrition arise.

It is the King’s first visit to Australia since he became the country’s head of state in September 2022.

However, they were partially blocked by a cruise ship, aptly named Queen Elizabeth, after its departure from the harbour was delayed by lightning and rain.
Queen Camilla disembarked the plane holding an umbrella. On her coat she wore a brooch made of white and yellow diamonds that was given to the late Queen Elizabeth II in February 1954 during her Commonwealth tour.
Before being driven away from the airport, the Queen received a posy of flowers from a group of young people.
The King and Queen were then brought to Admiralty House, the governor-general’s residence, for a private meeting with Australia's prime minister.
Official royal engagements will begin on Sunday, giving the King and Queen a day to recover from the long flight.
The programme of events for the King and Queen also looks a bit different from regular royal tours.
The timetables do not include evening engagements. There are no state dinners, and no trips out late in the day.

Senior Democrats in US cities are preparing to defend their communities in the event of Donald Trump’s return to the White House after the former president has repeated threats that he would use presidential powers to seize control of major urban centers.
Trump has proposed deploying the military inside major cities largely run by Democrats to deal with protesters or to crush criminal gangs. He has threatened to dispatch large numbers of federal immigration agents to carry out mass deportations of undocumented people in so-called “sanctuary” cities.
He also aims to obliterate the progressive criminal justice policies of left-leaning prosecutors.
“In cities where there has been a complete breakdown of law and order … I will not hesitate to send in federal assets including the national guard until safety is restored,” Trump says in the campaign platform for his bid to become the 47th US president, Agenda47.

Levar Stoney, the Democratic mayor of Richmond, Virginia, a city of over 220,000, said he was aware how difficult it would be to resist Trump given the enormous powers at a president’s disposal.
“It’s very difficult to autocrat-proof your city,” he said. “But you have to have backstops, and mayors are working in coalition to ensure they can be a backstop against these divisive policies.”
Gillian Feiner, senior counsel of States United Democracy Center, a non-partisan group working to advance democracy and fair and secure elections, said that many organizations were evaluating the legal landscape and preparing for practical challenges should Trump win. “State officials’ awareness of the threat level is high,” she said, noting that their alertness stood in contrast to 2016 when many states were taken by surprise by Trump’s actions.
Larry Krasner, the progressive district attorney of Philadelphia with whom Trump clashed several times during his presidency, said he was taking the former president at his word. “It is incredibly serious for big cities that lean strongly Democratic, as Philadelphia does, when a potential president who identifies with dictators all over the world talks about conferring on federal authorities powers they do not have.”

Trump’s disdain for cities run by Democrats has been a consistent theme of his politics. In his 2017 inauguration speech he vented against the “crime and the gangs and the drugs” within “inner cities”, dubbing them “this American carnage”.
During the turbulence following the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, Trump sent hundreds of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers, including border patrol Swat teams from the Bortac unit, to Portland and Seattle to protect federal property in running battles with militant protesters. Democratic officials in Portland asked for the 750 officers to be withdrawn, saying they were exacerbating the crisis, and a later investigation by the DHS inspector general criticized the deployment as ill-conceived and poorly executed.
A spokesperson for Portland’s mayor, Ted Wheeler, said that “city leadership and bureaus have been working for months in collaboration with our external partners to prepare for the upcoming election”, but declined an interview request.

In the build-up to November’s election, Trump has made his attack on big liberal cities a central pillar of his re-election campaign. Ahead of the Republican national convention, which nominated him as presidential candidate, he called Milwaukee, host of the event, a “horrible city”.
He has also denigrated Washington DC, telling a campaign rally last month that he would “take over the horribly run capital of our nation … clean it up, renovate it, rebuild it, so there’s no longer a nightmare of murder and crime”.
The most searing of Trump’s threats towards cities is that he will deploy the national guard, or even regular military forces, to combat urban protests and crime. He told a rally in Davenport, Iowa, last year that he would be much more aggressive in pursuing cities in a second term, saying that he would not wait to be invited in by mayors or governors but would act unilaterally.

Trump’s plans to deploy forces inside the cities depends upon his ability to bypass constitutional limits that generally forbid the military to be used in domestic law enforcement. The one exception is the Insurrection Act, which allows presidents to use the military or to federalise the national guard in order to restore order or put down a rebellion that is preventing the execution of US laws.
“If I thought things were getting out of control, I would have no problem using the military, per se,” Trump told Time magazine in April. “We have to have law and order in our country.”

In the Time interview, Trump also opened up on his plans to send federal agents into cities to round up undocumented immigrants as part of his threat to carry out mass deportations. He railed against “sanctuary cities”, municipalities which welcome migrants and resist their police officers acting as immigration officials.
“There’s a pent-up demand to end sanctuary cities, because it’s just not working out for the country,” Trump said. In Agenda47 he threatens to withdraw federal funds from local police forces that refuse to cooperate with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice).

Ron Nirenberg, the independent mayor of San Antonio in Texas, said that forcing city officials to act as immigration agents would distract from their proper work. “Let’s be clear, local law enforcement has their hands full dealing with local issues, we don’t need them to be doing the jobs of state and federal authorities.”
The mayor added that Trump’s rhetoric was already spreading fear among legal immigrants in San Antonio, whose population is 64% Hispanic. “People who are coming to the US through a legal asylum process are being forced to live in the shadows under threat of mass deportation that sends ripples of fear through families and neighborhoods.”
Progressive prosecutors who fail to abide by Trump’s hardline approach – whether by abolishing cash bail requirements that disproportionately hit people of color, or by avoiding custodial sentences for lesser crimes – are also in his sights. He threatens in Agenda47 to instruct the justice department to carry out investigations into “radical Marxist prosecutors” in cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco to see if they have “illegally engaged in race-based law enforcement”.

The irony, Krasner said, was that Trump is justifying his aggression towards cities based on rising violent crime, when in fact homicides are down by more than 40% in Philadelphia this year. A report by the thinktank Third Way has found that for 23 consecutive years the murder rate has been higher in Republican states that have voted for Trump than in Democratic states.
“The reality is that reform prosecution makes us safer,” Krasner said. “The policies that Trump represents – everybody should have a gun, mass incarceration is good, more division between rich and poor – get your ass killed in Republican states.”
