New record +1 my country’s shale oil single well peak daily output is 262.8 tons

Shale oil is an emerging energy resource, increasingly in demand due to the global surge in energy requirements and the depletion of traditional oil reserves. On October 20th, Sinopec announced significant achievements in its Shale Oil National Demonstration Zone located in Jiyang, Shandong Province. A single well there recently recorded a peak daily production of 262.8 tons of oil, setting a new domestic record for shale oil production from a single well, with estimated resource potential reaching up to 10.5 billion tons.

The Jiyang shale oil reserves are primarily situated within Shandong Province, covering an area of 7,300 square kilometers with an average burial depth of 3,000 to 5,000 meters, and locally reaching up to 5,500 meters. This region has the deepest shale oil deposits in mainland China, characterized by high temperatures and significant pressure. Thus, the challenges in exploration and development present a series of world-class issues.

Jiao Hongyan, the manager of Sinopec’s Shale Oil Project in the Shengli Oilfield, stated, “We have deployed a set of systematic core sampling wells. Based on the study of thousands of meters of core samples, and through 150,000 laboratory experiments, we have tackled over 40 national and provincial research projects to reveal the accumulation mechanisms of Jiyang shale oil, and we have initially clarified the patterns of accumulation and high production.”

Shale oil refers to petroleum resources trapped within shale rock formations, which are characterized by thin, layered sedimentary structures. Unlike conventional oil extraction, shale oil production necessitates hydraulic fracturing of the oil-rich shale to widen fractures using water and additives to release the trapped oil.

With the increasing global demand for oil and the decline of traditional resources, the market need for shale oil is on the rise. Currently, shale oil has been discovered in 75 basins across 21 countries, with recoverable resources estimated at 7 to 8 billion tons. The United States leads the world in shale oil production, accounting for 35% of global output. China also possesses extensive shale oil reserves, located in five major basins—Ordos, Songliao, Junggar, Sichuan, and Bohai Bay—as well as in eight smaller basins, including Qaidam, Jianghan, and northern Jiangsu. China’s recoverable shale oil resources are about 3.2 billion barrels, making it the third largest in the world.

Recent technological advancements have transformed previously “unmoveable” resources into “movable” ones. Shale oil is classified as an unconventional oil and gas resource, characterized by low permeability and poor flow characteristics, making extraction very challenging. However, through continuous technological breakthroughs and upgrades, China has made remarkable strides in shale oil production.

Currently, three national shale oil demonstration zones have been established, including the Jimsar National Shale Oil Demonstration Zone in Xinjiang, the Daqing Gu Long Shale Oil Demonstration Zone, and the Shengli Jiyang Shale Oil Demonstration Zone. The Jiyang Shale Oil National Demonstration Zone is China’s first continental graben lake basin shale oil demonstration zone. Researchers have enhanced their understanding of shale oil enrichment patterns and development mechanisms while effectively tackling the world-class challenges of high temperature, high pressure, and leakages.

Gao Guoqiang, a senior expert at Sinopec Group, remarked on the significant breakthroughs made by scientists in the Shengli Oilfield, who have transformed 90% of previously unreachable resources into accessible ones, greatly enhancing the productivity of individual wells.

Zhang Shiming, director of the Exploration and Development Research Institute of the Shengli Oilfield, added, “In the last decade, China’s unconventional oil and gas extraction has witnessed significant progress, complete with a robust exploration and development technology system that contributes to ensuring national energy security.”

Report of Bhutan Rinpoche’s World Visit- Buddhism Promotes World Peace

During a recent visit to the World Journal in New York, His Holiness Rinpoche Jula Lorben, a prominent member of Bhutan’s highest Buddhist authority and one of the nation’s five national-level Khenpos, shared profound insights into Buddhism while recounting inspiring stories from his childhood. Rinpoche spoke not only about the deep wisdom of Buddhism but also about the joyful memories of his youth and the challenges he faced while growing up in a difficult environment, ultimately leading him to become a respected Buddhist leader today.

Rinpoche, a vital figure in the transmission of both the Zhukpa Kagyü (White Sect) and Nyingma (Red Sect) traditions, remarked on the relative ease with which Buddhism spreads in Bhutan, where approximately 80% of the population identifies as Buddhist. He explained, “The fundamental teachings of the Buddha, imparted four to five thousand years ago, center on compassion and kindness. Even today, these principles remain unchanged.”

Reflecting on the common trials faced in spiritual practice, Rinpoche shared his personal experiences, including how he overcame severe illness and criticism from others. At just five years old, he was sent to a monastery to study Buddhism, despite coming from a poor family and having only one set of clothing. “I had only one outfit, which I had to wash and then lay flat on a stone to dry before I could wear it again,” he recalled. Despite the scarcity of resources, he remained dedicated to his practice, mentioning the food shortages during winter when monks often had to forage in the forests for edible plants or even borrow rice from neighboring villages. “I borrowed about 10 kilograms of rice back then, and I’ve yet to repay it,” he chuckled.

At the age of 31, Rinpoche suffered a serious illness that landed him in the hospital. Upon regaining consciousness, he returned immediately to his meditation center, as he had vowed not to abandon his practice. He reflects on these challenging experiences with a smile, stating that they have deepened his understanding of Buddhist teachings.

He believes his commitment to spreading the Dharma stems from its potential to bring peace and happiness to the world. “Buddhism emphasizes kindness and compassion, and the importance of not harming others,” he noted. Rinpoche is convinced that through acts of goodwill and mutual assistance, humanity can achieve global peace and happiness, viewing the teachings of Buddhism as the best means to promote this vision.

Rinpoche explained that Buddhism is not a creation of the Buddha but is grounded in natural law—principles like impermanence. “Whatever aligns with natural law should be embraced, regardless of its religious origin,” he said. He stressed that one ought not to follow a religion simply due to family or community influence but rather through an understanding and personal assessment. “By recognizing natural laws, we can transcend our troubles, achieving inner peace and tranquility.”

At the directive of the King of Bhutan, the Central Monastic Body and Singapore’s OOSS International Group are jointly investing in a large development project called the “Vajra King Center for Mindfulness City” in southern Bhutan. This initiative aims to create an ideal sanctuary for those globally seeking a new civilization. Rinpoche Jula Lorben is co-leading this project alongside Zhang Bosheng.

Goethe- His Faustian Life by AN Wilson review – a messy hymn to a very modern man

The biographer and historian worships at the altar of the German writer and his magnum opus in an ambitious book that ties itself in knots
Peter ConradSun 20 Oct 2024 08.00 EDTShareIn his 20s, AN Wilson was briefly a candidate for the priesthood. The Anglican God let him down back then, and he has spent the subsequent five decades auditioning substitutes. He now seems to have decided that a deity worthy of worship must be resident in our world rather than afloat above it, and he has therefore erected an altar to Goethe, the sage who “held the German soul in his hands”, established the country’s cultural pre-eminence, and incidentally possessed “the most interesting brain which ever inhabited a human skull”.
Wilson identifies the omniscient Goethe with the hero of Faust, the unstageable poetic drama that was his “whole-life masterpiece”, successively extended and reconceived between 1772 and 1831. In this “philosophical oratorio”, Faust begins as a rebel against Christianity but ends by superseding all established religion. At first he makes a deal with the devil, who prompts him to seduce and cynically abandon a village virgin; at last, evading damnation, he is redeemed by his faith in a benign force that Goethe calls “the Eternal Feminine”, which for Wilson honours the maternal nature that is the source of all life on our abused planet. Although Faust dizzily commutes between heaven and hell, Wilson believes that his exploits tell “the story of us”, exploring the heady but risky freedom we possess in a world no longer policed by God.
Goethe’s Faust appears here as the sovereign spirit of modernity. That’s a slippery notion: Wilson claims that Faust is modern because he is all at once scientifically curious, mystically inclined and sexually itchy, which is a lot to be going on with. Urging his imperial patron to mine the earth, Faust starts as a sponsor of 19th-century capitalism and its ruthless exploitation of nature. Next, early in the 20th century, Faust the erotic fantasist changes into “the forerunner of psychoanalysis”, since nature, as Wilson awkwardly puts it, is “among other things, but primarily among other things, sexuality”. But Faust also awakens the ecological conscience of “all who have confronted the power of nature and its beauty”, and in our own time, after being “tormented by the existential angst of the modern condition”, he still appeals to “those of us who are post- even the post-modern”. As these repetitions suggest, the argument is stretched thin, and over the course of more than two centuries Wilson’s hard-pressed buzzwords deflate like leaky balloons.
The narrative zigzags, and many erratically punctuated sentences don’t parse. Perhaps this negligence is FaustianGoethe spent his life writing Faust, but his was not really a Faustian life. Though he shared his hero’s sublime aspirations, he satisfied lowlier appetites as well, and Wilson is best when he trains a novelist’s sharp eye on foibles that, as he says in an outburst of spluttering alliteration, were “part and parcel of Goethe’s poetic personality”: his pot-bellied alcoholism, his age-inappropriate crushes and his covert recourse to Roman prostitutes, his snobbery and his taste for pompous interior decor.
Despite such failings, Goethe did possess a global mind, whose contents are unpacked and repackaged in this weighty book, where Persian poets, Hindu prophets and Chinese oracles jostle Plato, Kant and Hegel. My own head, I’m afraid, is not large enough to take in some of Wilson’s murkier explanations: discussing Goethe’s theory of colour, he remarks that “the entoptic apparatus was itself generative, a generativity that depended upon a torsional aspect of turning and returning light”. Could this be one of the aperçus that Wilson says he “culled” – a tell-tale word – from the academic authorities by whom he is bolstered? He concludes with what may be a solemn leg-pull, declaring that Walt Disney’s Fantasia, with “its pink, candyfloss gaudiness and its vulgar sentimentality”, is a truer tribute to Goethe than Thomas Mann’s tragic novel Doctor Faustus.
“A big journey!” sighs Wilson, puffed out as he nears the end. No wonder he sits down to draft one chapter during a meal at an Italian restaurant in Goethe’s home town of Weimar. Despite that pause for refreshment, the universal scope of the survey leads him to overlook petty matters of structure and clarity. The narrative zigzags, and many erratically punctuated sentences don’t parse. Perhaps this negligence is Faustian. At the climax of Goethe’s drama, the striving hero is condemned to death after pausing to review a recent accomplishment: does Wilson take that as a warning not to revise what he has just jotted down?
Even so, I can’t help admiring this act of homage. When Wilson introduces himself as an “absurd and confused reader” who will be “put in his place by a great Master”, his apology reminds me of another legendary idealist – a figure who is less metaphysically reckless than Goethe’s over-reacher, more apt to babble rapturously as he tilts at conceptual windmills. Goethe may be an avatar of Faust, but Wilson, who sets out on a mission that he says is impossible and travels round in circles as he pursues it, is dottily closer to Don Quixote.
