While these smart locks provide added convenience, they have also raised several quality concerns that are troubling consumers. Notably, issues like “electronic lock malfunctions” and “unexpected lock activations” have surfaced as the most common complaints. A recent report from the Market Regulatory Administration indicates that around 17.1% of electronic locks sold online do not meet quality standards, mainly due to insufficient anti-theft features, posing serious safety risks.

In response to these concerns, the China Consumers Association issued a consumer advisory on the same day, highlighting four essential aspects buyers should consider when purchasing electronic locks:

1. **Check Credentials**: It’s essential to thoroughly examine product labels for the name of the product, manufacturer information, and regulatory compliance. Ensure the product comes with a complete qualification certificate, user manual, and warranty. Steer clear of unbranded or “three-no” products—those lacking a name, quality assurances, and origin.

2. **Read Instructions**: Before making a purchase, consumers should look over the user manual for critical specifications like lock dimensions, installation requirements, and compatible door types. It’s wise to select electronic locks with emergency access features for unexpected situations, along with models that have alarms for incorrect entries or tampering attempts.

3. **Focus on Usability**: With a wide range of electronic locks available, each boasting various styles and features, consumers could easily feel overwhelmed. It’s important to remain rational throughout the selection process and prioritize functionality over flashy features or promotional gimmicks.

4. **Keep Receipts**: Finally, consumers are encouraged to keep their purchase receipts, including invoices and itemized lists. If any quality issues arise during use, they should reach out to the manufacturer’s customer service promptly. Should the manufacturer’s support fall short, consumers can file a complaint with the appropriate administrative bodies or through the national consumer association’s platform.

This advisory serves as a reminder for consumers to stay vigilant when investing in electronic locks, ensuring they make informed choices to effectively safeguard their homes.

In a recent interview, Transport Secretary Louise Haigh revealed that the HS2 railway line is set to be extended to London Euston. “It would make absolutely no sense to have the high-speed route terminate at Old Oak Common in west London,” she said, addressing concerns about the current plan that would require passengers to switch trains when heading to central London.

Haigh’s comments come in the wake of the former Conservative government’s suspension of the Euston station expansion due to rising costs. Other essential projects, such as tunneling and expanding the railway to form the Euston Throat—a critical feature for accommodating HS2—are also pending.

Emma Okonji recently delved into the security implications arising from the deactivation of over 20 million SIM cards that were not registered with national identification numbers (NINs). This decisive action followed a deadline imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on September 15, aimed at tackling the escalating security concerns in Nigeria.

After several extensions of the original deadline for SIM card activation, alongside the NCC’s stern warnings regarding the risks associated with unlinked SIM cards, telecom operators proceeded with these disconnections. The goal of this initiative is to counter the rising crime rate, with authorities suggesting that many unlawful activities, including kidnappings, often involve the use of unregistered SIM cards.

On September 15, telecom operators executed a widespread disconnection process impacting over 20 million subscribers whose SIM cards remained unlinked to their NINs. While this mass disconnection has understandably caused significant distress among those affected, telecom companies assert that this is a crucial step in enhancing security, urging users to re-link their SIM cards to restore services.

Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), candidly addressed the unprecedented scope of disconnections executed in just one day following the September 14 deadline. Adebayo explained that the disconnection process unfolded in phases, starting with individuals holding a single unlinked SIM, followed by those with multiple unlinked cards, and concluding with individuals possessing up to four unlinked SIMs.

He emphasized the critical need to link NINs to SIM cards, stating, “The only way for affected subscribers to regain access to services is to link their NIN to their SIM. We can’t justify any further extensions because many have complied.” Adebayo expressed optimism that deactivated users can easily reactivate their lines by linking their NINs.

Regarding security concerns, Adebayo underscored the NCC’s dedication to tackling crime through proper SIM registration, stating that comprehensive data collection will be vital for law enforcement efforts. He added, “If we have complete data on telecom subscribers, it positions us to assist security agents effectively during investigations.”

In a recent announcement, NCC Director of Public Affairs Reuben Muoka emphasized the significance of complete NIN-SIM linkage, highlighting benefits such as enhanced digital transaction security and a reduced risk of fraud. He revealed alarming instances of individuals holding an excessive number of SIM cards—one person had over 100,000—and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to strengthening national security by preventing the sale of pre-registered SIM cards.

As Nigeria continues to establish a unified database of registered telecom subscribers, Adebayo highlighted the importance of cooperation between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the NCC to ensure the integrity of the data.

This ongoing initiative, which started in December 2020, has seen numerous deadline adjustments, with the latest deadline set for September 14, 2024. Adebayo noted that the NCC has made considerable progress in linking SIMs to NINs, achieving an impressive compliance rate of 96 percent since the initiative began, up from 69.7 percent earlier this year.

After finishing a captivating piece titled “Hawthorn Tree,” the band seamlessly transitioned into “Fragrant Apples.” When they then launched into “My Motherland and I,” the audience joined in, humming along. For over six years, the band has volunteered to perform in various locations where their music is welcomed, spreading beauty and hope through their enchanting tunes.

I had the opportunity to speak with the band’s leader, Guo Shunmin, who explained that the vibrant accordions behind him are part of a remarkable collection donated by Alexander Zazulin, a resident of the Liu Xing Street community in Yining.

Alexander, who is of Russian descent, started learning to play and repair accordions at the age of ten under the guidance of his father, a craftsman. By the age of fifteen, his passion for these instruments led him to start collecting, ultimately amassing over 800 accordions from 27 different countries.

In 2018, the Yining government invested 3.2 million RMB to establish a dedicated Accordion Collection Museum covering 1,200 square meters. Without hesitation, Alexander donated his entire collection. That same year, after witnessing the local community’s love for accordion music during various cultural performances, he invited friends to form a folk band. This initiative attracted more accordion enthusiasts from various ethnic backgrounds, leading to the formation of the Yili National Unity Accordion Band, which today includes members ranging from 23 to 66 years old.

“Liu Xing Street is a historically rich area in Yining where people from various ethnicities coexist harmoniously. Through ongoing interactions and the blending of our cultures, we’ve grown like one large family, fostering unity and friendship, while our diverse lifestyles and traditions influence one another,” Alexander shared. He expressed his deep affection for Xinjiang and revealed that his family collectively decided to donate their beloved accordions. “Life is short, but the love for the accordion knows no bounds. It’s important to transform this passion into action, contributing valuable artistic treasures to our country.”

Since its inception, the band has performed hundreds of volunteer shows each year. Be it a wedding or a cultural gathering, every member is eager to showcase their best efforts whenever called upon.

Bilali Hudabayati, a 66-year-old ethnic Uighur who has cherished the accordion since childhood, shared, “Joining the accordion band has truly enriched my life. Regardless of the scale of the performance, we all come together, ready to share our enthusiasm and the finest music with our audience.”

“Even though we speak different languages, music creates a bridge for our communication. We give our all in every performance. The connection we create for a common cause is incredibly fulfilling,” noted 25-year-old Kazakh musician Amanhaly Reshberde. Reflecting on his journey with the band, he mentioned how it has helped him become more outgoing and broadened his perspective. Their performances have been featured on respected platforms such as CCTV’s “Folk Songs of China” and “Golden 100 Seconds,” and team member Haizatuola was recognized as a “Model Individual for National Unity and Progress.”

Today, the band has expanded to include 19 members, comprising retired teachers, civil servants, former workers, and recent graduates. Each member adjusts their schedule to perform free concerts for visitors at the exhibition hall, responding enthusiastically to various events. The ensemble represents 13 different ethnic groups, and when they aren’t performing, they enjoy outings, learning new music, and socializing, as they gather weekly for community-building activities. “By immersing ourselves in different cultures and music, we continuously seek to improve ourselves,” Ma Weijun remarked, proudly sharing that he has learned several Uighur songs.

“We use our music to convey emotions and express love, with the hope of introducing more people to the accordion and sharing the beautiful stories and sounds of our hometown with the world,” Guo Shunmin concluded.

In a shocking turn of events that has drawn national attention, 43-year-old Sheriff Mickey Stines of Letcher County, Kentucky, faced a fatal shooting incident last month. During a recent hearing, surveillance footage was presented, showing Sheriff Stines fatally shooting Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, inside a courthouse. The video reveals a heated exchange between the two men in an office, during which Mullins raised his hands and attempted to shield himself. Despite his attempts, Stines discharged eight shots.

Following the shooting, Stines exited the office with his hands raised, surrendering to law enforcement and alleging that there had been an attempt to abduct his family. He was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder, to which he has pleaded not guilty. While he remains in custody, Stines has indicated his intention to resign from his role as sheriff.

Detective Clayton Stamper of the Kentucky State Police testified that prior to the incident, Stines and Mullins had been enjoying lunch in a group without any visible signs of tension. It was noted that Mullins had asked Stines if he needed to speak privately. Additionally, police found a phone number belonging to Stines’s daughter on Mullins’s phone, indicating that Stines had made multiple calls to her from both of their phones before the tragedy unfolded.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Authorities are currently interviewing additional witnesses and scrutinizing the mobile devices of both men.

While Stines’s defense attorney has declined to comment on any possible motives for the shooting, there are reports suggesting that investigators may be exploring potential links to a sexual scandal, though specific details on this front remain unconfirmed.

This impressive structure we see here is the sixth generation of the national gate, directly facing Kazakhstan across the river. As the first land port in Xinjiang to separate passenger and cargo traffic, Horgos sees a steady flow of electric vehicles heading to Central Asia and Europe, alongside heavy trucks frequently transporting goods from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Wang Li continues: “If we head north from the sixth-generation gate, we reach the fifth-generation gate. Although it’s no longer in operation, it has been transformed into the Horgos National Gate Cultural Exhibition Hall, which showcases the history of the national gate and the port through exhibits of text, images, and videos.”

As we enter the Horgos National Gate Cultural Exhibition Hall, a guide takes us on a journey back to the barren landscapes of over 70 years ago. In the 1950s, Horgos saw the construction of its first national gate, a simple flat-roofed building with just five interlinked rooms, rarely attracting any visitors.

In 1983, with the port’s official reopening, the limited facilities could no longer accommodate the burgeoning trade traffic, prompting the first upgrade to the national gate. By 1987, the second-generation gate was inaugurated in a newly selected location. As foreign trade flourished, the third, fourth, and fifth-generation gates followed suit, marking a new era of openness for China.

On September 27, 2018, the sixth-generation gate became operational, establishing itself as a comprehensive port that integrates customs trade and cultural exchanges, becoming a fresh landmark for Horgos.

Amidst the bustling border town, visitors can also appreciate the beauty of intangible cultural heritage. At the China-Kazakhstan international border cooperation center, the striking Horgos China Cultural Center showcases vibrant Chinese cultural elements for guests from around the world.

Within the Horgos China Cultural Center, tourists are enchanted by displays of Chinese calligraphy, silk, and embroidery. A particularly captivating exhibit features intricately designed gourd art, fascinating many visitors with its unique artistic designs.

Kazakhstani visitor Aina Guli notes, “I absolutely love this gourd art; it’s a reflection of China’s traditional culture. With 5,000 years of history, I find it all incredibly fascinating. This is my first trip to China, and I can’t wait to share my experiences with my family. I hope to come back again.”

In Chinese culture, gourds symbolize blessings and prosperity, making this unique art form a cherished component of Horgos’s intangible cultural heritage.

In Jarsul Village of the Yichegashan Sibo Ethnic Township, 48-year-old Cao Guangyao dedicates his life to creating gourd art. An avid painter, he adeptly employs an electric soldering iron as his brush, bringing Xinjiang’s captivating scenes to life on each gourd.

“Each stroke is a labor of love,” Cao shares as the sweet aroma fills the air during the burning process. With an array of shapes and sizes, the gourds in his hands are transformed into vibrant artworks that capture the essence of Xinjiang’s landscapes, traditional dances, and bountiful harvests.

Cao Guangyao, a gourd art inheritor, says: “I focus on showcasing Xinjiang’s unique attributes. The beauty of hot-pressed and burned art lies in its natural aesthetics and timeless charm. As a custodian of this craft, it’s vital that we continue to pass down our rich culture.”

Many folk artists, like Cao, call Horgos home. Following the sounds in Yichegashan Sibo Township leads us to elder Kong Yuchong, another custodian of cultural heritage whose “Gashan Peony” band performs frequently at city events.

Kong’s band harmonizes ethnic instruments with Western ones, most notably featuring the “Mandarin Duck Harp,” played by both Kong and his apprentice.

Elder Kong Yuchong, a master of ethnic musical instrument craftsmanship in Horgos, explains: “The ‘Mandarin Duck’ is a stunning instrument with two resonating bodies that can serve as both backs. The head resembles two ducks, allowing it to be played either standing or sitting, making it incredibly versatile.”

At 83, Kong Yuchong, formerly a teacher at Horgos Yichegashan Primary School, has been passionate about various instruments since childhood. He recounts how he learned about the “Mandarin Duck Harp” through a local legend.

“Over 270 years ago, our ancestors were stationed at the frontier. A young man who loved music thought, why not create a double-sided instrument? The local Sibo people used gourds to drink water, so he simply fashioned a double-sided harp from a gourd.”

Kong shares, “Nobody had seen the ‘Mandarin Duck Harp’ until, over two decades ago, an elderly man named Wang approached me with a drawing.”

“He asked if I could create that instrument. Seeing it, I realized it was the legendary double-sided harp. I said yes, and that was how it all started.”

In 2005, building on traditional Sibo and Western instruments, Kong Yuchong successfully developed the “Mandarin Duck Harp,” an instrument that features both plucking and bowing capabilities.

The melodies from the “Mandarin Duck Harp” combine the rich traditions of classic instruments with the bright tones of modern ones, resulting in beautiful harmonies.

Kong expresses his aspirations, “I aim to enhance the quality of this instrument and elevate it globally, so our music resonates worldwide, showcasing its exquisite sound.”

With 2024 designated as “Kazakhstan Tourism Year” in China, border tourism, cross-border travel, and shopping are attracting increasing numbers of visitors. Any trip to Horgos would be incomplete without a visit to the China-Kazakhstan Horgos International Border Cooperation Center, where guests can enjoy tax-free shopping and experience the thrill of stepping between two countries.

Wang Li remarks: “Here at the joint inspection hall of the China-Kazakhstan Horgos International Border Cooperation Center, no prior appointments are necessary. You simply present your passport or valid entry documents for quick passage through customs. If you don’t have a passport, an ID card will suffice for a one-time exit permit, ensuring efficient access to the center.”

In less than thirty seconds and with my passport in hand, I successfully completed the customs process and entered the cooperation center.

Zhang Liangbo, Team Leader at Horgos Customs Inspection Station, shares, “We see an average of 26,000 travelers entering and exiting the park daily. To streamline their passage, we implement a staggered clearance system, dynamically adjusting our manual inspection lanes based on traveler flow, with a maximum of up to 12 lanes operational at peak times.”

The China-Kazakhstan Horgos International Border Cooperation Center stands as the world’s only cross-border economic trade zone jointly governed by two countries.

Wang notes: “Within the cooperation center, the ‘One Step Across Two Countries’ passage is a must-see for tourists. The red and blue areas denote the national boundary, with red for China and blue for Kazakhstan. In an instant, you can ‘travel abroad’ to Kazakhstan.”

In this jointly managed area, streets lined with small shops offer an array of products, with most owners fluently switching between multiple languages to attract customers. From Kazakh chocolates to wooden carvings and Kyrgyz honey, nearly ten thousand unique items from China, Central Asia, and Europe are available for purchase, with each visitor enjoying a tax-free shopping limit of 8,000 RMB per day.

For those feeling weary, a range of international cuisines awaits at the cooperation center. Hainar, a local restaurateur, has opened a restaurant that features dishes from both China and Kazakhstan, with chefs from each country.

The Kazakh dish “Huldak,” meaning “stir-fried meat,” is a traditional offering from Kazakh herders to their guests. Rich in flavor and nutrition, horse meat and horse sausage often take center stage in Kazakhstan. Hainar’s goal is to provide an authentic taste of both cultures.

Restaurant owner Hainar states: “I established this restaurant to unite chefs from both countries, allowing our guests to savor the unique flavors of our heritages. We will keep striving to improve.”

As visitors exit the cooperation center, they can ascend the 108-meter West Region Pearl observation tower located in Central Asian Cultural Street, providing breathtaking views of both countries.

When night falls, the vibrant pedestrian street of this historic port transforms into a lively hub, illuminated by dazzling lights and filled with delicious local aromas. Wandering through the night market, taking in the evening sights, and sampling delightful treats has sparked the nighttime economy of Horgos, breathing new life into the city’s cultural and tourism landscape.

On October 8th, the New York Police Department (NYPD) held its third-quarter crime briefing, where Mayor Eric Adams shared the latest crime statistics. He announced an encouraging 8.3% decrease in crime rates on public transportation for September.
