-Watergate- reporter’s new book- Biden privately called Netanyahu a -son of a bitch- and regretted appointing Garland

In his forthcoming book “War,” seasoned journalist Bob Woodward uncovers some striking remarks made by President Biden during a private conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Woodward, celebrated for his investigative work on the Watergate scandal, reveals that Biden did not hold back in describing Netanyahu, referring to him as a “son of a bitch” and a “bad guy.” This candid exchange took place amid the rising tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where Biden also voiced strong opinions about Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to a CNN report from October 8, Woodward’s book, scheduled for release on October 15, chronicles Biden’s frank critiques of world leaders in private discussions. The author conducted hundreds of hours of interviews with various sources, offering vital insights for this project.

One excerpt reveals a conversation Biden had with friends concerning Netanyahu’s military actions in Gaza. During this discussion, he expressed his irritation with phrases like “son of a bitch” and “bad guy,” particularly in response to Netanyahu’s repeated promises to eliminate all Hamas members. Biden argued that such a goal was unattainable, even going so far as to threaten to withhold U.S. military aid to Israel, both privately and publicly.

Biden’s vivid language also extended to his discussions about Putin following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In conversations with his aides in the Oval Office, he labeled Putin “evil” and described their predicament as one involving “the epitome of evil.”

Woodward’s book suggests that Biden’s national security team assessed there was a 50% chance that Putin might resort to using nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

On a separate note, regarding his son Hunter Biden’s ongoing legal challenges, the President expressed regret about appointing Merrick Garland as Attorney General during chats with friends. He also critiqued former President Obama’s approach to Putin’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, implying that Obama failed to take the threat seriously. Biden attributed Putin’s later aggressions toward Ukraine to the U.S.’s lack of a strong response to the Crimea situation in 2014, stating, “They screwed up in 2014” and lamenting that the U.S. “did nothing.”

Before the Russian invasion, U.S. intelligence had accumulated significant evidence indicating Putin’s intentions to mobilize a force of 175,000 as early as October 2021. Woodward notes in his book that both Biden and his aides recognized the gravity of Putin’s plans, though they found them difficult to fully believe.

American expert- China’s 144-hour transit visa-free policy has achieved remarkable results

On October 8, Mario Cavolo, a senior researcher at the Center for Globalization and an American author, shared his insights in China Daily regarding the recent surge in foreign tourists venturing into China. He attributes this trend to the Chinese government’s savvy implementation of a 144-hour visa-free transit policy for travelers from 54 countries.

Cavolo explains that this visa-free transit initiative has significantly opened up opportunities for foreign visitors to delve into China’s rich tapestry of history and culture. Drawing from his extensive experiences in Shenyang and the surrounding regions of Liaoning Province, he emphasizes the area’s many noteworthy attractions. He points out that many international travelers are unaware of Northeast China’s historical importance, including its picturesque countryside, celebrated ice wine vineyards, and vital sites linked to China’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

Moreover, Cavolo stresses that various regions across China are teeming with distinct historical cultures and stunning natural landscapes, offering foreign tourists abundant opportunities to explore and appreciate. The reach of the 144-hour visa-free transit policy has expanded to 37 ports across 54 countries, encompassing major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, thereby simplifying the travel experience for those eager to visit key destinations.

One of the most promising outcomes of this policy, Cavolo notes, is how foreign travelers are starting to share authentic stories about their experiences in China on both international and Chinese social media. From trekking the Great Wall to embarking on culinary adventures in diverse urban and rural settings, these travelers offer a genuine glimpse into the country.

Tourists have expressed admiration for the hospitality of the Chinese people, the richness of traditional culture, and the modern infrastructure they encounter. This positive reception not only resonates with global audiences but also serves to counteract the often negative portrayals of China found in Western media.

Interestingly, while foreign visitors typically enjoy sharing their experiences without fear of backlash in other countries, they often face judgment when recounting their travels in China. This existing double standard in the West warrants examination. Critics would benefit from visiting China themselves and experiencing the safety and warmth of its people firsthand, which could significantly alter their views.

Finally, it’s important to recognize that China’s visa-free transit policy marks a significant milestone in international relations, promoting tourism, enhancing cultural exchanges, and fostering greater mutual understanding.

In summary, whether it’s visiting ancient temples, wandering through charming villages, or enjoying world-class shopping, foreign tourists are gaining a deeper appreciation for China’s contributions to the global community.

Wang Ying, General Manager of Tencent Video’s Online Commercialization Department, commented, “With the significant user influence and reach of our film and television IPs, we can greatly enhance the brand awareness of offline cultural tourism projects in the short term and lower the threshold for tourist experience and consumption. We are especially focused on developing strong offline tourism products and business models in collaboration with our partners, as this is crucial for the commercial success of cultural tourism projects. Tencent Video aims to achieve long-term commercial triumphs in offline entertainment products in collaboration with our partners, using a value-driven approach from start to finish. We are delighted to see the AC Original Animation Exhibition becoming a new landmark for cultural tourism in Wuxi, a must-visit place for domestic animation enthusiasts, and a haven for original animation creators to connect.”

Currently, Tencent Video has developed popular products like large-scale fireworks shows themed around IPs, domestic animation-themed carnivals/music festivals, IP-themed hotels, VR experiences, and animation exhibitions. These projects consistently generate explosive brand influence, sustained visitor engagement, and economic benefits for cultural tourism, while continuously innovating and deepening the cultural impact of the city by providing new directions and inspiration for offline cultural tourism projects.

Industry insiders analyze that beneath the visible consumer draw of the film and television industry lies the core driving forces of public psychology and emotional consumption, which propel the planning and operation of IP derivative products. Successful film and television works often ignite interest in related locales, neighborhoods, cuisine, and merchandise, reaching a consensus within the industry. Local governments should focus on long-term strategies, building deep connections with production parties, and actively seeking to become filming locations to achieve mutual benefits. Beneficiary regions should seize opportunities to transform film and television IPs into engaging experiences, cultivate audiences’ long-term consumption habits, and enhance subsequent service quality, converting traffic into sustainable consumer momentum.

South Los Angeles pastor and civil rights icon, Rev. James Lawson Jr., dies at 95

Longtime South Los Angeles pastor and community leader, the Rev. James Lawson Jr., died Monday at age 95. Lawson was instrumental in the 1960s civil rights movement and worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. promoting unity and nonviolence.
In January, South Los Angeles honored the pastor of Holman United Methodist Church with a stretch of Adams Boulevard dedicated as the “Rev James Lawson Mile.”
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Heather Hutt, who led the street dedication, said earlier “Rev. James Lawson was a relentless advocate who, during the Civil Rights Movement, led Freedom Rides, advocated for voting rights, and truly built a legacy that left an indelible mark on social justice movements around the world.”
Lawson served as pastor at Holman United Methodist Church from 1974 to his retirement in 1999.
Born James Morris Lawson Jr. Sept. 22, 1928, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the son and grandson of Methodist ministers, Lawson was raised in Massillon, Ohio.

While a college student in Ohio, Lawson was drafted by the U.S. Army, but refused to serve due to his belief in nonviolence and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Released after 13 months, Lawson returned to college to finish his education, then traveled to Nagpur, India as a Methodist missionary to study the nonviolence resistance tactics developed by Mahatma Gandhi.
He returned to the United States in 1956, entering the Graduate School of Theology at Oberlin College in Ohio.
In 1957, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he attended Vanderbilt University and began teaching nonviolent protest techniques.

In February 1960, following lunch counter sit-ins initiated by students at a Woolworth’s store in Greensboro, North Carolina, Lawson and several local activists launched a similar protest in Nashville’s downtown stores. More than 150 students were arrested before city leaders agreed to desegregate some lunch counters.
Lawson was expelled from Vanderbilt in March 1960 because of his involvement with Nashville’s desegregation movement. Lawson eventually reconciled with Vanderbilt and returned to teach as a distinguished university professor.
Vanderbilt established an institute for the research and study of nonviolent movements bearing his name in 2021.
Lawson participated in the 1961 Freedom Rides which challenged segregation on interstate buses and bus terminals.
Lawson became pastor of Centenary Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962. In 1968, when Black sanitation workers in Memphis began a strike for higher wages and union recognition after two of their co-workers were accidentally crushed to death, Lawson served as chairman of their strike committee.
Lawson and King led a march in support of the strikers on March 28, 1968, which erupted in violence and was immediately called off.
In what would be his final speech on April 3, 1968, one day before his assassination, King spoke of Lawson as one of the “noble men” who had influenced the Black freedom struggle.

“He’s been going to jail for struggling; he’s been kicked out of Vanderbilt University for this struggling; but he’s still going on, fighting for the rights of his people,” King said.

Designer Sheila Rashid preps for first-ever Chicago Fashion Week in October

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago area designers are already preparing for the first official Fashion Week in the city.
The inaugural event doesn’t happen until October, but they are already beginning to work on their collections for the shows.
One designer gives a look inside her studio as she prepares to show her new collection on opening night.
You can’t find fabric like this anywhere except in Sheila Rashid’s studio in Little Village.
“The designers here just have to make, carve their own space, like, it doesn’t matter what any other designers are doing. We just kind of do our own thing,” she said.

Sometimes, that “thing” looks like collaging old photographs from 90s black hair magazines to make your own denim.
“Each collection, I try to come up with something that I’m inspired by, and my last collection, Good Hair Day, was inspired by my mom. I grew up in the salon.”
For nearly two decades, Rashid has been designing and developing a distinct look—one that she says is made to reflect Chicago from her perspective.
“I feel like we kind of have our own subculture, you know, which is not known for that, but to know that my style pretty much reflect the city, that’s big for me. I just feel like I am, you know, epitome of, you know, just being here,” she said.

She uses bold colors and plenty of denim to create unisex workwear fitted for the city’s fickle weather and style particularities.
“I believe that Chicago’s fashion is pretty monotone, like, we like our sets, we like to match. You know, we like our monochrome look, and we get all four seasons.”
Her collections have caught the eye of Chicagoans and celebrities alike. Zendaya, Bella Hadid, Lena Waithe, and Chance the Rapper have worn her designs. What she’s bringing to Chicago Fashion Week hasn’t been seen on any red carpet or Instagram feed.
“I’m going to probably present something I’ve never done before. I’m going to make a new collection,” she said.
Something distinctly Chicago for a week of fashion that Rashid thinks will permanently elevate the city’s fashion scene.
“I hope that it will bring something annually for the city because nothing has ever really stuck, like, oh, this is for fashion, this is for Chicago fashion, and I feel like this, this really screams that to me.”
The official Chicago Fashion Week, endorsed by the city and Choose Chicago, will take place across the city from Oct. 9-12.
